Sunrise on Sprague Lake

Sunrise on Sprague Lake I took this photo early in the morning on Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.  I almost missed the sunrise by sleeping past 4:30 that morning.  When arrived, this was my first view of the lake.  I was nearly moved to tears as I walked the half-mile loop around the [...]

Abstract Photography

On a whim, I took this creative photo of a waterfall.  I achieved the abstract effect by zooming in while the shutter was open.  I looked at the photo on the LCD screen and decided the experiment didn’t work and moved on.  Looking at it on my large monitor I see potential for abstract art.  [...]

Silhouette

Silhouette Here is another photo I took while in Brazos Bend State Park.  I went to the park at dawn to take pictures during the magical photography hour, but found myself on the wrong side of the lake for the photos that I had envisioned in my head.  So, I found this tree and stood [...]

Fall Color

Who knew there could be fall colors down in Houston?  I certainly did not expect to find this colorful group of trees in Brazos Bend State Park the other day.  Camera specs: Nikon D300 with 18-200mm VR lens at 70mm, f/8.0 @ 1/250 seconds, ISO 200.

Winter Trees

White Tree, Blue Sky There were lots of hoarfrost covered trees in the geyser basin of Yellowstone National Park.  The ice build up on this tree from the steam off the geysers is very thick.  What was most amazing about the hoarfrost here was that a lot of the buildup happened overnight.  The weather and [...]

Fuzzy Ice

Fuzzy Ice A winter in Yellowstone National Park is breathtaking.  Hear you can see steam from the geysers collecting on plants and turning to ice.  The resulting fuzzy look is called hoarfrost.  I found this little weed at the bottom of a sign post.  The ground was warm from all the thermal activity and the [...]

Look behind you

There are so many gorgeous views, sights, and details surrounding us all the time.  I love photography because it allows me to capture a moment of pure beauty in the world.  Sometimes the beauty is in the details, but very often the beauty is in the surrounding sights.  I also love nature and hiking because [...]

Driftwood in Black and White

Choosing when to convert a photograph to black and white is usually a very subjective process.  I usually make the decision to convert a photograph when the colors are either very muted or do not contribute to the photograph.  Another technique that I recently saw is to take all your photos from a photoshoot and [...]

Mountain Top Panorama

Top of the World Panoramas are my favorite landscape photos because you can print the photo very large and still keep all the detail.  When I hike to the top of a mountain, like I did here in Olympic National Park on the Lillian Ridge Trail, I always try to capture a panorama image.  It [...]

Photo of the Day

Fuzzy Flowers I am starting to enjoy the photo of the day.  I hope you are as well.  I also took this one in Olympic National Park while backpacking.  You can see how much I enjoy using diagonal lines in my photographs.  This shot was hard to take with a backpack on as I had [...]
